This is a 1-hour restorative yin yoga practice. For those not familiar with yin yoga, postures in this class are more passive than those in our flow classes. We focus on gently stretching the deep connective tissues surrounding the joints (hips, knees, spine, sacrum). To protect these delicate areas as we work joint strength and flexibility, we hold the poses for 3-5 minutes. Our time in holding the poses will test our mental strength to remain still as we learn to listen to our bodies. During this time, we have to surrender our “normal” way of thinking within any workout. We have to practice disengaging our larger muscle groups and release through the connective tissues. “Being still” through the poses also offers an opportunity for a more meditative, prayerful practice. Through this class, we must surrender physically and hopefully mentally and spiritually, as well. This class is for any and everyone. Yin is a great complement to other styles of yoga and forms of exercise. It helps us to learn to be comfortable with the uncomfortable and asks us to surrender, to “just be”, to be still, to listen, and to accept where we are in that given moment.
